Why Should We Memorize Scripture and the Catechism?
- We are
commanded to hide God’s Word in our hearts and to consider (meditate upon)
it throughout each day. [Deut.
11:18-19; Joshua. 1:8; Ps. 119:97]
- It gives
us God’s wisdom and direction. [Ps.
119:105; Ps. 40:8]
- It keeps
us from sin and folly. [Matt.
4:1-11; Ps. 119:11; Ps. 37:31; Eph. 6:13,17]
- It allows
us to pray according to God’s word and will anytime and anywhere.
- Having
Scriptures in our mind and heart allows us to share them with others - in
evangelism, in teaching, and in ministering comfort and
encouragement. [1 Pet. 3:15; Col.
3:16; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Rom. 1:16; Rom. 10:17]
- It unifies
the church around a common task.
- It helps
purify our hearts. [Ps. 119:9; Heb.
4:12]
- It helps
our prayer life. [John 15:7]
- It helps
our Spiritual life. [Ps. 119:93]
- It gives
us freedom in Christ. [John
8:31,32]
