Do You Have Any Tips To Help Me Memorize?

We sure do!
We have listed below many of the techniques others have used to help them in memorizing Scripture.  Please feel free to use whichever of these tips can help you and tell others what has worked for you.  (Many of these ideas are taken from the Fighter Verse program of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, MN.)
  1. Come to Church.  We will be reciting the verses together and therefore you can start to memorize them without much difficulty.

  2. Develop a routine.  Don’t leave it to “chance” or for the end of the day.  Think through your daily routine and determine when would be the best times to go over the memorizations -- then commit to using those times.

  3. Start a meal off with a verse.  When you gather for a meal in your house, spend 15 seconds and recite a memory verse together.

  4. Post the verses in a prominent location.  Reminding yourself to memorize is part of the battle.  Display the verses on a bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, by your computer,  next to your favorite chair, your car dashboard, or some other place to remind you.

  5. Repeat the verses out loud.  Saying a verse aloud is often a key to remembering it.  Hearing it is more helpful than just thinking it.  Say it several times in a row.

  6. Rehearse the verses frequently.  Try to repeat the verse daily.   However, doing it throughout the day would be even more helpful.  Opportunities including while driving, during family meal times, while doing certain chores,  during breaks at work, while exercising, and so on.

  7. Use the verses.  Don’t just memorize for the sake of memorizing.  Use the truths within the verses for yourself or for others as you encounter various situations.  Use them in your prayer life.  You may be surprised how relevant the memorizations may be to your daily life!

  8. Write out the verse and meditate on it.  The act of writing and thinking through the meaning of the passage can usually help in retention of the words and their truth.  Use part of your daily quiet time to review and meditate.  Write them in a journal or notebook.  Writing down increases review and concentration.  Write them on sticky notes and post them around the house.  Make flash cards.

  9. Decide to do it.  You must personally decide that you want to grow as a Christian, that memorization will be beneficial to you, that, though this task may be difficult, you are willing to make the commitment, and that the Holy Spirit will be with you.

  10. Pray for God’s help.  We must remember that this is a spiritual task and will require spiritual means.  The world, the flesh, and the devil will all fight you to keep you from this opportunity for spiritual growth.

  11. Memorize the verse in manageable segments.  If the verse is a little long, divide it up into smaller segments (usually 2-4 words).  Memorize the first segment well, then move one to the second.  Combine the two, then move on to the third, on so on.  The passages selected are designed to be shorter rather than longer.

  12. Spend part of each day reviewing previous memorizations.  Keep a list (on a card, in your calendar, etc.) which you can review memorizations from previous months and years.  We don’t want to forget what we have already learned.
